Staggering Cable Hat

For head size 21-1/2 inches 

Yarn:  Worsted weight approximately 150 yds

Needles:  Sizes 6 and 8 16-inch circular and size 8 double points 

CO 96 sts with size 6 needles.  Join into circle being careful not to twist stitches and place marker at beginning of row.

Ribbing

Row 1:  *P2, K2 repeat from *

Row 2:  K 1 *P2, K2 repeat from * end P2, K1.

Repeat rows 1-2 for ribbing.  I made mine 2 inches.

Change to size 8 needles

Place makers every 12 sts if desired; leave beginning marker a different color.

 

For body of hat work rows 1-14 once, rows 3-14 once, then rows 3-7 once.

 

Rows 1-3:  *K6, P2, K2, P2 repeat from *

Row 4: *K2, P2, K2, P6 repeat from *

Rows 5-6: *P2, K2, P2, K6 repeat from *

Row 7: *P2, K2, P2 Work crossover on next 6 sts as follows: Slip 3 sts to cable needle         and hold in front of work, K3, K3 from holder repeat from *

Row 8-9: *P2, K2, P2, K6 repeat from *

Row 10: *P6, K2, P2, K2 repeat from *

Row 11-12: *K6, P2, K2, P2 repeat from *

Row 13: *Work crossover as before on first 6 sts, P2, K2, P2 repeat from *

Row 14: * K6, P2, K2, P2 repeat from *

 

Begin decrease for crown as follows and switch to double pointed needles when needed.

 

Row 8: *P2tog, K2, P2tog, K6 repeat from *

Row 9: *P1, K2, P1, K6 repeat from *

Row 10: *P1, K2tog, P1, K2, K2tog, K2 repeat from *

Row 11: *P1, K1, P1, K2tog, K1, K2tog repeat from *

Row 12: *K2tog, K2, K2tog repeat from *

Row 13: *K1, K2tog, K1 repeat from *

Row 14-15: K2tog around.

 

Break yarn and thread through sts, pull tight and weave in ends on back side to finish.
